In this research we introduce a plasmonic nanoparticle based optical biosensor for monitoring of molecular binding events. The sensor utilizes spotted gold nanoparticle arrays as sensing platform. The nanoparticle spots are functionalized with capture DNA sequences complementary to the analyte (target) DNA. Upon incubation with the target sequence, it will bind on the respectively complementary functionalized particle spot. This binding changes the local refractive index, which is detected spectroscopically as the resulting changes of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) peak wavelength. This paper summarizes a preliminary design concept for the focal plane assembly of the X-ray Integral Field Unit on the Athena spacecraft, an imaging microcalorimeter that will enable high spectral resolution imaging and point-source spectroscopy. The instrument's sensor array will be a ~ 3840-pixel transition edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeter array, with a frequency domain multiplexed SQUID readout system allowing this large-format sensor array to be operated within the thermal constraints of the instrument's cryogenic system. Inkjet printing methodologies for drug screening

We show for the first time a contactless, low-cost, and rapid drug screening methodology by employing inkjet printing for molecular dispensing in a microarray format. Picoliter drops containing a model substrate (D-glucose)/ inhibitor (D-glucal) couple were accurately dispensed on a single layer consisting of the enzymatic target (glucose oxidase) covalently linked to a functionalized silicon oxide support. Extended gate electrode arrays for extracellular signal recordings

Abstract We have fabricated arrays of planar gold electrodes arranged in a matrix of 8×8 with active areas ranging from 6 to 30 μm in diameter. An electronic amplification circuitry based on commercial junction field-effect transistors was used where the gold sensor fields act as extended gate electrodes (EGE) of the transistors, which leads to a new approach for long-term extracellular recording systems in vitro. The high input resistance of the amplification circuitry allows the use of small planar bare gold electrodes without further modification which therefore extends the frequency range of the measuring set-up down to the DC-level. A new beamline for energy-dispersive high-resolution PIXE analysis using polycapillary optics

Abstract A new beamline for high energy resolution PIXE measurements is presented. This new setup includes options for both in-air and vacuum measurements. For the high energy resolution transition-edge sensor array, a polycapillary lens is used for detecting low-energy X-rays down to 0.5 keV and to increase the effective solid angle. X-ray transmission of the polycapillary lens was characterized using two calibration standards. The gain obtained by adding a polycapillary lens was 1.6–2.3 at energies between 2.1 keV and 4.5 keV. From 1.04 to 1.74 keV the gain is increased to 2.1–3.0, and at energies 4.9–8.0 keV the gain is between 1.6 and 0.65. The measured gain agreed well with theoretical…
Real-time and low-cost sensing technique based on photonic bandgap structures

[EN] A technique for the development of low-cost and high-sensitivity photonic biosensing devices is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In this technique, a photonic bandgap structure is used as transducer, but its readout is performed by simply using a broadband source, an optical filter, and a power meter, without the need of obtaining the transmission spectrum of the structure; thus, a really low-cost system and real-time results are achieved. Experimental results show that it is possible to detect very low refractive index variations, achieving a detection limit below 2 x 10(-6) refractive index units using this low-cost measuring technique. Acoustic transmitters for underwater neutrino telescopes.

In this paper acoustic transmitters that were developed for use in underwater neutrino telescopes are presented. Firstly, an acoustic transceiver has been developed as part of the acoustic positioning system of neutrino telescopes. These infrastructures are not completely rigid and require a positioning system in order to monitor the position of the optical sensors which move due to sea currents.
